Education and prevention are cost-effective strategies that promote better personal health management and reduce the ultimate cost of conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. The cost of an emergency department visit for a nonemergency condition is approximately $976; the cost of treatment aboard the Family Van averages just over $100 per encounter, which includes four screenings for preventable illnesses.
