The Family Van

Volunteer Testimonials

WHAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY

The Family Van works with medical education institutions to provide medical and allied health students with supervised rotations aboard the Van to help inspire and train the next generation of family healthcare providers. The Family Van team also trains a number of its own volunteers on how to give compassionate care and how to approach important social aspects of health care.

Volunteers discussing referrals

“I initially chose to be a part of the Family Van Program to gain a better understanding of what the most pressing issues were for individuals in underserved neighborhoods. What I expected from the experience was to learn how to perform screening and get oriented with working in a community of color... After some time on the van, I realized that my efforts would yield not only what I expected, but a new perspective.”

A past volunteer training a new volunteer

“[A]s a Family Van volunteer, providing health screenings to members of these communities was very personal to me because I too have, and continue to be exposed to many of the social factors that contribute to the poor health outcomes... In this sense, I am appreciative that I got the chance to examine these determinates of health from two different perspectives and was able to witness the role that individual health plays on community health.”
